Partner Spotlight: Gaya from KIDS
Share
In the heritage town of Kottapuram, Thrissur, Gaya from KIDS has been transforming lives through craft since 1988. What began as a small NGO with 200 women artisans has grown into a thriving community spread across 12 departments, supporting women, differently abled individuals, and local skill-building initiatives.
At the heart of Gaya’s work is the revival of screwpine weaving, an ancient craft that requires only skill and patience. Once considered a “waste plant,” screwpine is now turned into beautiful, functional, and biodegradable products. The artisans also experiment with water hyacinth stems, creating innovative designs while keeping tradition alive. Each collection carries the name of the artisan-tutors, honoring their role in passing down these timeless skills.
Beyond weaving, Gaya serves as a learning hub, welcoming design students and young professionals to collaborate and gain hands-on experience. The cluster also takes on custom design projects, showing how traditional craftsmanship can meet modern needs.
Products from Gaya are delicate and natural, encouraging careful handling and appreciation as heritage pieces rather than everyday objects.
We at Swara are proud to partner with Gaya from KIDS, bringing you three handcrafted products from their artisans: Haven Coin Purse, Hearth Envelope Purse and Harbor Roll-Up Pouch.
Each piece carries the spirit of Kottapuram’s heritage, the skill of its women artisans, and the story of a craft that continues to thrive through care, creativity, and community.
