Partner Spotlight: Chhoti Si Asha

In the bustling city of Chandigarh, Liza Chawla once led a very different life. Before she became the visionary behind Chhoti Si Asha, she worked as an IT professional, both in India and in Silicon Valley, with companies like Johnson & Johnson and Siebel Systems. But in 2005, something inside her stirred. She and her husband made a life-changing choice: to leave the corporate world behind and return to India, to a life “closer to their hearts.”

In 2006, Chhoti Si Asha was born — literally meaning “A Little Hope”. Founded with love, patience, and a deep commitment to enabling change. From those early days, Liza’s mission was clear: to create sustainable livelihoods for underprivileged women living in slum communities in and around Chandigarh.

Weaving Lives, One Stitch at a Time

At Chhoti Si Asha, the coming together of tradition, design, and community is more than just an ideal; it’s a daily practice. Women artisans learn skills in stitching, embroidery, and design. They collaborate on styles that are both contemporary and rooted in craft. Over time, the small beginnings have grown: laptop sleeves, cushion covers, journals, keychains, stylish bags, stationery, and more. Each product embodies not just technique, but the stories, dedication, and heritage of its maker.

The organisation also emphasises learning, self-esteem, and dignity. From vocational training programs to literacy, from supporting migrant women and communities to creating fair trade opportunities, Chhoti Si Asha has touched many lives.

Swara & Chhoti Si Asha: A Partnership Rooted in Craft

We at Swara have had the joy of partnering with Chhoti Si Asha for many years now. Their artisans have long been making journals for Swara. When you hold one of those journals, you don’t just hold paper and thread; you hold the daily craft, care, and hopes of women who design, stitch, and embellish it.

We are continually amazed by what Chhoti Si Asha has achieved: turning a humble initiative into a thriving creative enterprise; building skills and confidence in women who had few chances; preserving craft traditions even while innovating designs to suit today’s sensibilities.

Why Their Work Matters

When you choose a product made by Chhoti Si Asha, you’re supporting more than just beautiful artistry. You are enabling women to earn sustainable incomes, bringing education and opportunity to communities where these are rare, and helping ensure that traditional craft techniques continue to live on.
