Theory of Change

We started Swara with a simple belief: when women in India earn steadily and their work is visible, everything changes. We create income opportunities by co-creating ethically made clothes and accessories with women artisans, keeping orders consistent, paying fairly and on time, and making the maker visible. Those paychecks turn into school fees, savings, and everyday decisions—building confidence and true financial independence. As customers see the hands behind what they wear, mindsets shift and buying habits follow; ethical products become normal, not niche. Over time, simple actions done consistently—make well, pay fairly, tell the truth—chip away at stereotypes and strengthen families and communities. And because Swara is a for-profit company, we prove what should be obvious: investing in women isn’t charity; it’s good business—and a powerful, overlooked source of talent and growth.

The problem

Women artisans do beautiful work but often don’t get steady orders, fair pay, or visibility. Shoppers want to buy better, but it’s hard to find brands they can trust.

What we do

1) Fashion & livelihoods
We design and make clothes and accessories with women artisans. We pay fairly and on time, support quality and finishing, and keep orders consistent.

2) CraftHER (learning programs)
We host on-ground learning journeys in Kerala. Students and young professionals work with women-led enterprises, learn from the field, and create useful projects.

3) Storytelling & community
We make the supply chain visible — who made it, where, and how — through films, photos, and writing. We build a community that cares about dignity and craft.

How we stay accountable

We listen to our artisan partners, check quality and timelines, gather feedback from scholars and partners, and review consent and safety for all stories we share.

We learn, improve, and share openly.
